‘Beep beep!’ Busy lynxes are sending us text messages
Of course, female lynx Nora is not really pressing buttons on her mobile phone! It is rather the tiny mobile radio unit inside her little collar that is transmitting data to staff members of the project. Currently, four lynxes, 66 roe deer, and 49 red deer are wearing such collars with GPS-receivers (they weigh 400-900g depending on the species). Thus, we are able to accurately locate animals.
and this is how it works...
As soon as a radio-tagged animal enters a transmission area, its collar sends out a text message. Through this type of ‘memo’, it is possible to display an animal’s route in detail on a map. Additionally, the collar stores data of the animal’s activity and the temperature on its body surface – data that help researchers get to know the animals better.
